Lately I have noticed a tendency for people to lean towards green shrubs and grasses that are "low maintenance". This is creating a large lack of flowers where the bees and other pollen loving bugs and animals used to feed. As a community we should be planting more flowers, it takes a little more work to care for but in the long run you will feel the satisfaction of knowing you are helping that one tiny corner of nature to survive.
Plants that bees and humming birds like include, but are not limited to, bee balm, carnation, jasmine, clematis, wisteria, cyclamen, day lily, oriental lily, peony, yucca, shrub davidia, Crocosmium, lipstick plant, fireweed, ground boxwood, rhododendron, rose bush, hydrangea, as well as many others.
picking one or more of these can help support the wildlife in your area.
